PG is the historic tool for self-hosting of podcast. Grounded in over a decade of experience in building PG, Ben and Alberto decided partner and launch a brand-new podcast hosting company and call it RSS.com, that quickly became one of the most popular and fastest-growing podcast hosting and distribution companies worldwide. He released new versions of PG to the community for 11 years, until 2017 circa. Since the launch of PG in 2006, Alberto invested his spare time in maintaining and improving this free podcasting tool. Over the years, PG also gathered a broad and diverse community of content creators and volunteers from all over the world, who also translated and localized it into 56 languages. PG was downloaded over 1 million times and it powered an estimated 30,000 original podcasts worldwide. Being available as a preinstalled package along with major web apps such as WordPress, PG popularity increased. On top of being available on Sourceforge (once the biggest open source community), PG was included as a preinstalled app by Softaculous and it was offered out-of-the-box in the control panels of thousands hosting, cloud and NAS service providers globally. In April 2006, Alberto decided to share PG with the community under an open source license.Īfter the launch of PG as an open source app for anyone to use freely, PG started to gain increasing traction and wider adoption. The results of these efforts gave birth to Pluriversiradio, one of the first educational podcasts in Italy and Europe which preceded major initiatives such as iTunes U, a service by Apple to distribute educational content in podcasting that was launched one year later. With this in mind, PG was conceived to be extremely simple to use and easy to customize. We’ll see him again." Maggie May" is a song co-written by singer Rod Stewart and Martin Quittenton, and performed by Rod Stewart on his album Every Picture Tells a Story, released in 1971. But he was just starting on his journey to becoming the drunk uncle of pop music. Stewart would stick around with the Faces until the band’s 1975 breakup, maintaining his more-popular solo career at the same time. He wasn’t crazy about the song, and neither was the label it started out as the B-side to his single “Reason To Believe.” But radio DJs liked the B-side better, and it took off, turning Stewart, in short order, into a star. Stewart might not have meant for “Maggie May” to become that. (Stewart’s real father was a master builder.) But then he hits on another idea: “Or find myself a rock ‘n’ roll band that needs a helping hand.” And just like that, “Maggie May” becomes Rod Stewart’s superhero origin story. He thinks about going back to school, or about becoming a pool hustler, like his father. Stewart is thinking about what he can do with his life now that it’s been totally upended. He kept rambling.Īs Tom Ewing’s “Maggie May” review points out, there’s a great lyrical trick toward the end of the song. And yet he ends it all unmoored and regretful: “Maggie, I wished I’d never seen your face / I’ll get on back home one of these days.” He never did, of course. Stewart is nebulously pissed off: “I know I keep you amused, but I feel I’m being used.” He’s cruelly petty: “The morning sun, when it’s in your face, really shows your age.” But he’s also completely caught up in her: “You stole my heart, I couldn’t leave you if I tried.” The music is a warm, affectionate reel, a sign that Stewart’s looking at all this with a happy glow rather than a seething rage. “Wake up, Maggie, I think I’ve got something to say to you,” Stewart starts out, as if this has been keeping him up all night, even though he’s too conflicted to articulate what he needs to say. It’s more of a freeform unburdening, a wild parade of accusations and equivocations and confessions of love. ![]() There’s no chorus to the song, no structure. ![]() He’s mad about it, but he’s not sure why he’s mad. Something has happened, and he’s not sure how it’ll affect his life, but he knows he’ll never be the same again. “Maggie May” is the sound of a guy processing a formative experience. Nobody sounded anything like Rod Stewart. Every Picture Tells A Story, the album that gave us “Maggie May,” remains an absolute motherfucking front-to-back burner. It comes out organic, as if Stewart had drunkenly stumbled upon this sound. On paper, that combination looks a little too neatly triangulated, but that’s not how it sounds. (Jackson only got session-musician pay for that, and no songwriting credit, and he was pissed off about that for decades.) For two albums, Stewart had been figuring out his own solo style, which built folk instrumentation and sloppily cluttered rock arrangements around his beautifully whiskeyed white-soul rasp. Ray Jackson, of the folk group Lindesfarne, improvised the mandolin intro. Stewart co-wrote “Maggie May” with Martin Quittenton, guitarist for the blues-rock band Steamhammer. And thanks to the song that Stewart wrote about that afternoon in 1961, his solo records soon came to overshadow anything the Faces did. (The Faces’ highest-charting song was 1971’s “ Stay With Me,” which peaked at #17.) But Stewart had also started recording his own solo albums in 1969. So Wood and Stewart came in to replace him, and the Small Faces became the Faces, leaning into Stonesian blues-choogle and enjoying another pretty-great run. Frontman Steve Marriott had just left the band to form Humble Pie with Peter Frampton. When that band broke up in 1969, Stewart and his Jeff Beck Group bandmate Ronnie Wood (still six years away from becoming a Rolling Stone) joined the Small Faces, a pretty great London band who were huge in the UK and who’d had some success in the US. ![]() ![]() Since proverbs are symbolic in nature, it’s easy to read one and be reminded of a particular memory or moment in your life when you witnessed that same teaching. Perhaps you’re immediately drawn to a proverb like where there’s a will, there’s a way and are reminded of a time when you sacrificed everything to achieve a goal. First, read through a list of proverbs and choose one that speaks to you. The well-known proverb is being challenged from the outset and can be explored in more depth by the supporting paragraphs.Īnother way to use proverbs in writing is to consider them as prompts for a story. In this example, the paper’s main argument, that certain aesthetic judgments are universally observed, is perfectly set up thanks to the proverb’s inclusion. Does this mean that beauty can be observed objectively?” Recent studies have found that this may not be true, and there may in fact be standards of beauty that are accepted universally across cultures. “When it comes to observing art, many will agree with the truism that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder,’ meaning all aesthetic judgments are subjective. But for this very reason, including a proverb that you then complicate or question can give your argument teeth or draw in the reader.įor example, in a philosophy essay, you could begin with: Since the two goals of formal essay writing are objectivity and specificity, it might not seem like a good idea to introduce a proverb (which is often broad-ranging and general). In an essay, for example, it can be a strategic choice to start off with a proverb that is then disproved or challenged. Instead, try challenging the narrative offered by the proverb. Incorporating a proverb or two into your creative writing can be a fun or interesting way to play with words, but if you use these types of phrases too regularly, you can come across as disingenuous or clichéd. How to include English proverbs in your writing Proverbs have a literal meaning and tend to express a truth or dispense advice such as actions speak louder than words all’s well that end’s well a leopard never changes its spots. Idioms express an idea or thought and are phrases that contain a group of words that typically wouldn’t make sense together (e.g., it’s raining cats and dogs, pulling someone’s leg, by the skin of your teeth ). Both are forms of expression that are natural to groups of people and are short and pithy, and both are very challenging for English language learners to understand because they include innate meaning that isn’t always discernible just by reading the words. Proverbs and idioms are similar and easily confused with one another. When translated, the researchers were surprised at how easy it was to understand these snippets of Sumerian wisdom, showing how proverbs reach across cultures and time.Įnglish proverbs should also not be mistaken for the Book of Proverbs, a book in the Old Testament. According to archaeological studies, nearly 700 tablets containing more than 1,000 proverbs written by Sumerian scribes were discovered by researchers. In fact, some of the earliest recorded proverbs date back to the ancient Sumerians in 2000 BCE. ![]() Some proverbs can be reflective of a specific culture or locale, though the majority transcend regional barriers and are widely embraced and often passed down through generations. Stylistically, they differ from regular forms of speech because they are metaphorical or symbolic in nature. ![]() Oftentimes, proverbs are used to illustrate a point. Proverbs communicate an understood and accepted message in a few well-worn and well-known words. For example, rather than your manager saying, “We will only be successful if we approach the client before any other marketing firm reaches out to them,” she can simplify this explanation to “the early bird catches the worm.” Everyone in the meeting will know what she means. Proverbs can offer a shortcut for explaining or imparting information as well. Proverbs are so common that native speakers of English may use them in conversation without realizing it.
